A Life Worth Living

As I wake up to the sun shining through the cracks in the blinds, decorating the bed in golden stripes, I open my eyes slowly. The waking world beyond my bedroom window beckons me to join its side. I feel a profound sense of peace and wonder toward the day ahead. The natural cycle of things ignites a fire in me to see what part of that cycle will falter, flourish, or fail completely. I am fueled by the hum of the birds and insects as they go about their day, unbothered by thoughts of how—or if—they will survive. I, too, am learning to share in that sense of tranquility and belonging that lies at the heart of nature. They are wired to just… be.
My routine is simple, yet in its simplicity lies complexity. I get up, make the bed, wash my face, brush my teeth, descend the stairs to the kitchen, complete any household chores that need tending, and make coffee. As soon as that black, satin liquid touches my lips and warms my throat, I am filled not only with a soothing warmth but also with a river of inspiration and encouragement I find nowhere else. It may sound silly that something as simple as a cup of coffee could inspire me so deeply, but it does. Everyone has their muse, that little nudge of encouragement to begin the day headstrong and happy. Coffee is mine.
My routine is solid in its making, consisting of practices that are common—or should be—in most everyone’s life. Yet somehow, it gives me purpose and focus, two things I would rather die with than live without.
I encourage everyone to have a routine and to perfect it in such a way that, even if it is a common routine, it feels as if it’s solely yours—as though no one else in the world has what you have. That’s what makes the human experience so unique to each individual: it’s not what you do, but the meaning it holds for you. Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, and yet, every time I make and enjoy it, I feel as if it was created solely for me.
Personalize your life. That’s the only way to find belonging and uniqueness in this common world and to feel connected to the never-ending cycle of life, nature, and the pursuit of happiness.
xoxo, Mads
